Nestled in the heart of Japan, Nara is a city rich in cultural heritage, where ancient traditions blend seamlessly with modernity. Among its treasures is Ono Kikuno, the only practicing geisha in Nara. As a guardian of this exquisite art form, she captivates audiences with her talents, embodying the grace and beauty that define Japanese culture.
A Legacy of Traditional Arts
Born in Osaka, Kikuno began her journey into traditional Japanese arts after graduating from junior high school. She trained in disciplines like Nagauta (traditional singing), shamisen (three-stringed instrument), Japanese dance, kouta, calligraphy, tea ceremony, flower arrangement, and hayashi (traditional music). Her apprenticeship as a maiko (apprentice geisha) began at Nara's renowned Kikusuiro and her aunt's teahouse, Tsuruya.
After three years of training, she debuted as a maiko at Kikusuiro. Following her ceremonial erikae (collar change), she was promoted to geisha in 1996, symbolizing Nara’s rich geisha tradition.
Master of Traditional Japanese Arts
Kikuno’s talents extend beyond her role as a geisha. In 1998, she earned the title of natori in the Mochizuki school of hayashi as Mochizuki Taimeikaju. The next year, she became a natori in the Hanayagi school of dance as Hanayagi Taka. Her performances at prestigious venues like the National Bunraku Theatre in Osaka, Shochiku-za, and the historic Tokyo Kabuki-za have enchanted audiences far and wide.
